Student protests and GMOA strikes

Last week, thousands of university students stormed the Health Ministry demanding the government to abolish the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM). This resulted in a clash as the Police and the Special Task Force (STF) was deployed to disperse students. The decision of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) to go on strike was a sudden move which was announced after 90 student- protesters were hospitalized following the clash.

In the recent past, there have been many strikes launched by the GMOA, most of them were based on the demand to nationalize the SAITM. Although the response of the government was very slow, certain decisions were taken by the Higher Education Ministry in relation to SAITM such as decisions to nationalize the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital (NFTH), requesting SAITM to stop recruiting students and so on. However, neither the GMOA nor the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) which are the force behind the anti-SAITM protests, were satisfied by any of the actions taken by the government. The students continued to protest and doctors resorted to strikes without compromise.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Convener of the IUSF, Lahiru Weerasekara was arrested and remanded until 5 July along with two other student activists. Ceylon Today spoke to Ryan Jayalath, Convener of the Medical Faculty Student Active Committee.
Jayalath stressed that there exists a military rule at present and the government is trying to suppress students and protect SAITM, which is a fraudulent institution. He added, so far three student-activists have been arrested and as per the information received there are plans to arrest more student leaders and weaken the struggle against SAITM.

Meanwhile, commenting on Wednesday’s incident where thousands of university students broke into the Health Ministry and clashed with the Police, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said, the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) was behind the incident.

“They wanted to get one of the students killed. There is no reason to invade the Health Ministry, damage property and clash with Police if they just wanted to protest,” he said.

However, Jayalath who is a major organizer of anti-SAITM protests claim that these protests are not politically motivated and not backed by any party.

“This is a struggle of the people. Not a struggle of only university students. As Senaratne said we do not want a dead body. Yet, it implies that the government is willing to kill one of the protesters. How fair and democratic is that?” he questioned from the government.

Accordingly, the IUSF lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) against the brutal attack carried out by the STF. Jayalath claims that they went to the Health Ministry on public day and the Minister was not there to meet him.

Accordingly, nearly 90 students were injured and are being treated at the National Hospital, Colombo.

The Health Ministry claimed that the protestors had damaged property worth around Rs 1 million. Minister Senaratne claimed that this was an act of violence and not the way to express opinions.

Doctor strike

The GMOA in response to the attack against the university students and the failure of the government to provide solutions to the crisis regarding SAITM launched a strike on Thursday. GMOA General Secretary, Dr. Naveen de Soysa, told the media that in addition to the strike in Government hospitals, members of the GMOA also kept away from private practice as well.

According to Dr. Soysa, the GMOA demands include the Attorney General informing the Court about the lack of standards for teaching at SAITM, gazetting the minimum standards required for medical education and the nationalization of SAITM. However, after the discussions with the President the strike was called.

The GMOA said that despite the countrywide strike, emergency services in all hospitals continued. The strike also spared children, maternity and, cancer hospitals and kidney patients.

Doctors were also at hand to treat patients with fever, to identify those who are diagnosed with dengue and to provide treatment accordingly.

“We will ensure that not a single patient’s life will be lost due to our strike action,” stressed Dr. Soysa.

Dr. Soysa added, they are willing to have discussions with the President and the Prime Minister, but not with Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne, who they claim was justifying the fraudulent acts of SAITM and attempting to give it legal recognition.

However, Ryan Jayalath assured the continuation of struggle against SAITM and claimed the movement will become more powerful.

2015 ඔක්තෝබර් 29 වැනි දින එච්.එන්.ඩී.ඒ සහ අන්තර් විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ශිෂ්‍ය බලමණ්ඩලයේ සිසුන් සහ ක‍්‍රියාකාරිකයින් විසින් එච්එන්ඞී හි ගිණුම්කරණ ඩිප්ලෝමාවට උපාධි සමානතාව ලබා දෙන ලෙස ඉල්ලමින් විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ප‍්‍රතිපාදන කොමිෂන් සභාව දක්වා සිදු කරන ලද විරෝධතා පාගමනට පොලීසිය විසින් මිලේච්ඡ ප‍්‍රහාරයක් එල්ල කරන ලදි.

ඊට කඳුළු ගෑස්, බැටන් ප‍්‍රහාර සහ ජල ප‍්‍රහාර යොදාගත් අතර සිසුන් සෑහෙන පිරිසක් තුවාල ලබා රෝහල් ගත කළ අතර 39 දෙනෙකු අත් අඩංගුවට ගනු ලැබුණු අතර මේ වන විට ඔවුන්ව ඇප මත නිදහස් කොට ඇති බව සැලයි.

වත්මන් රජය බලයට පත්වූයේ අධ්‍යාපනය සඳහා අටවැයෙන් වැඩි වෙන් කිරීමක් සිදුකරන බවත් ශිෂ්‍ය ගැටළු විසඳන බවත් යන පොරොන්දු ලබා දෙමිනි. බලයට පත්වූ සෑම ධනේශ්වර පාලක කල්ලියක් මෙන්ම මේ පොරොන්දු විගසින් අමතක කොට ඇත. විශ්ව විද්‍යාල, පාසැල්, උසස් අධ්‍යාපන ආයතන සහ කාර්මික අධ්‍යාපන ආයතන යන සෑම ඒකකයක්ම අර්බුද වගින් ගහණව පවතී. එහෙත් ඒවා විසඳා ගැනීමට අරගල ක‍්‍රියාමාර්ගයේ නියුතු දරුවන්ට ලැබෙනුයේ මිලේච්ඡ මර්ධනයයි.

ශිෂ්‍යන්ට මෙන්ම ශිෂ්‍යාවන්ට ද මිලේච්ඡ ලෙස පහර දෙන අයුරු මාධ්‍ය හරහා මුළු රටේම ජනතාව බලා සිටියහ. ස්ත‍්‍රියකට සලකන ආකාරයෙන් එම රාජ්‍යයේ ශිෂ්ඨත්වය මැන ගැනීම අපහසු නොවේ. ඔවුන්ගේ අතීත අපරාධ සිහියට නැගේ. දමිළ පුරවැසියන්ට එරෙහිව මහා ජන සංහාරයක් සිදු කළ ඔවුහු ස්ත‍්‍රී දූෂණ සහ අපරාධ සිදු කළ ආරක්ෂක අංශ වලින් ලෝකයේ මුල් තැනට පැමිණ තිබේ. ‘‘බුදුන්ගෙ දේශයේ රණ විරුවන් පැමිනෙන විට, ස්ත‍්‍රිය ඔබට කළ හැක්කේ ඔවුන්ගේ අවශ්‍යතාවයට ඉඩ දී වැතිර සිටීම පමණකි. අසරණ ඔබ කුමක් කරන්නද?’’ මේ අනාථ කඳවුරක දමිල ගැහැණියක් ලියූ වැකියකි. රතු පස්වල, තුන්නාන, වැලිකඩ සිර ගෙදර, අලූත්ගම ජාතිවාදී ප‍්‍රහාරය සහ අකුරැස්ස, තංගල්ල යන පෙදෙස් වල නිමක් නොමැතිව සිදු වූ ස්ත‍්‍රී දූෂණ ද ඇතුළත් සිය අපරාධ ලැයිස්තුව පාලක කල්ලිය විසින් තවත් විස්තීර්ණ කරමින් සිටී. තමන් යුධ අපරාධ සිදු නොකල බව කියමින් මේ දිනවල ඔවුන් හඬ නගන්නේ මෙවැනි තත්ත්වයක් තුළය.

අරගල කිරීමට, අයිතීන් වෙනුවෙන් සටන් වැදීමට මේ රටේ පුරවැසියන්ට පැහැදිලි අයිතියක් ඇත. පොලිස් මාධ්‍ය ප‍්‍රකාශක ඇතුළු කූට කල්ලියක් විසින් මෙහෙයවනු ලැබූ මාධ්‍ය සාකච්ඡාවේදී රාජ්‍ය ත‍්‍රස්තවාදය සහ පොලිස් මිලේච්ඡත්වය යුක්ති සහගත කරගනු ලැබිණි. ධනේශ්වර රාජ්‍ය තුළ පැන නැගී ඇති නව ප‍්‍රවණතාව වන්වේ පොලිස් රාජ්‍යයන් බවට ඒවා හැරවීමයි. මේ තුළ පොලීසිය විසින් කරනු ලබන ඕනෑම අපරාධයක් ව්‍යවස්ථාව අනුව සහ ඔවුන්ගේ නීතිය අනුව නීත්‍යානුකූල කරගැනීමට ඔවුන්ට හැකියාව ඇත. ඔවුන්ට මිනී මැරීමට, හිංසා කිරීමට, වධ දීමට සහ බිය වැද්දීමට නීත්‍යානුකූල අයිතියක් ලැබී ඇත.

ජනතාව මේ තත්ත්වය අවබෝධ කරගනිමින් මර්ධනය හමුවේ නොසැලී එකා වන්ව නැගී සිට අරගල කරන්නන්ට ලබා දෙන සහය තීව‍්‍ර කළ යුතුය. මේ ප‍්‍රහාර විසින් පාලක පංතිය පුළුල් පොදු ජනතාව කෙරෙන් හුදෙකලා කොට වඩාත් කොන් වී ජනතාවගේ කෝපය තමන් වෙත එල්ල කරගනු ඇති අතර අරගල කරන්නන් ජනතාවගේ සහය, අනුකම්පාව සහ ආදරය වඩ වඩා දිනා ගනු ඇත.

අරගල කිරීමට ජනතාවට අයිතියක් ඇත. මර්ධනය කිරීමට පාලකයින්ට කිසිදු අයිතියක් නැත.

Yahapālanaya At Work: Brutal Police Attack On Students

Students who were engaged in the protest march organised by the Inter Student Collective for the Protection of Higher National Diploma in Accountancy (HNDA) being brutally attacked by the police near Town Hall yesterday. The students were on their way to the University Grants Commission (UGC) urging the authorities to enhance the HNDA to a degree status again.
